First of all, the entry-level model: the iPhone 14.
Today we zoom in on the iPhone 14, which serves as the entry-level model of the new generation.
The difference with the iPhone 13 is very small this time. Still, there are a number of improvements for the iPhone 14. What has Apple come up with this year?
iPhone 14 in brief:
- The design resembles that of the iPhone 13
- Cameras better than before in low light
- Selfie camera with wider aperture and autofocus
- Battery lasts 1 hour longer compared to iPhone 13
- Color: white, black, red, blue and purple
- iPhone 14 new price: 1019 euros
- September 9th the pre-order started
- September 16 iPhone 14 release date
Apple has once again launched four iPhone models, with two cheaper and two more advanced versions. The iPhone 14 Plus will replace the "mini" with a 6.7-inch screen. These are the models:
- iPhone 14 (6.1")
- iPhone 14 Plus (6.7'')
- iPhone 14 Pro (6.1")
- iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7'')
In 2020 and 2021, Apple launched a high-end phone in a compact jacket: the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. The mini devices (with a 5.4-inch screen) were not the success that Apple hoped. So instead, there will be a larger iPhone 14 Plus. But we'll discuss these later.
The last time the iPhone design changed drastically was with the iPhone X in 2017. At that time, the iPhone for the first time got a virtually borderless design, without a home button and with the infamous 'notch'. This is the well-known bite from the screen, which includes the selfie camera and Face ID technology. This year, the regular iPhone does not have many innovations in design. The two cheaper models (the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus) again have a notch design. It is the same size as the iPhone 13. Furthermore, the iPhone 14 looks slightly tighter due to the thinner screen edge and slightly rounder corners.
Still no Pro-Motion screen
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max were the first iPhones with ProMotion. Allows the screen to refresh faster (up to 120 Hz). This is especially noticeable when swiping and scrolling, where the display looks smoother. ProMotion can also lower the refresh rate (to 10 Hz) to save battery.
Unfortunately, this iPhone 14 still doesn't have a ProMotion display. A screen with 120 Hz therefore remains an exclusivity of the more advanced Pro models (i.e. the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max). We also see an always-on display with the Pro models. The iPhone 14 has the same Super Retina XDR OLED screen as the iPhone 13.
The camera: better in low light
For years (since the 2015 iPhone 6s), iPhone cameras have had 12-megapixel lenses. This remains the same with the iPhone 14. However, the camera of the iPhone 14 has been improved. We mainly see this in the (selfie) camera of the iPhone 14 (Plus). For example, in low light it can film and shoot 49 percent better.
The TrueDepth camera also gets new features: 'Autofocus' for extremely sharp photos and 'Film mode' for good videos are two of these new functions. In addition, 'Action mode' should provide even better image stabilization. The entry-level model of Apple's new flagship does not get macro photography. However, you can use portrait mode with the selfie camera.
The iPhone 14's camera seems to be one of the biggest improvements.
This year there is a striking difference between the regular iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro: only the more luxurious Pro models get the new A16 Bionic chip. The standard iPhone 14 models have to make do with the A15 Bionic, which is now also in the iPhone 13 (mini). This one has gotten a little faster. In addition, the iPhone 14 models are equipped with more RAM for an even better experience.
Does the iPhone 14 still have a SIM card slot?
Apple sees no future in physical SIM cards. It is therefore only logical that future phones from the company will work with e-SIM, an electronic SIM card that you activate digitally. The Apple Watch with LTE (mobile internet) also works this way. Currently, this virtual SIM card is only tested in the US.
Apple announced the prices of the iPhone 14 models during the announcement. These have become much more expensive. The iPhone 14 has a suggested retail price of 1019 euros. If you want a slightly larger model (with a better battery), choose the iPhone 14 Plus. This costs 1169 euros. Below we have made an overview for the prices in combination with the storage memory of the iPhone 14.
- iPhone 14 (128GB); 1019 euros
- iPhone 14 (256GB); 1149 euros
- iPhone 14 (512GB); 1409 euros
These were the improvements of the iPhone 14. This model will have to wait a little longer at iApples.nl. But luckily, the introduction of the new iPhone means that the prices of the iPhone 13 have dropped. Take a quick look in our webshop!
